Helpful Information on Maine Coon cats

Here at Mighty Kitty Maine Coons we are here for you if you have any questions about purchasing a Maine Coon Kitten. You are welcome (depending on the age of the kittens) to come and view them at our home and see how our cats are provided for. We are proud of our welfare standards and don't mind showing them off!

We love our kittens to go to 'cat safe' homes where they are not free to roam on busy roads etc. Our cats are able to play in the garden as we have cat proof fencing (which is reasonably cheap to do if you have DIY knowledge) but we don't let them roam. There are too many dangers and Maine Coons do not have a lot of road sense. We find our Maine Coons are happy if given lots of playtime, cuddles, high places to climb and sleep and if possible an outdoor catio for them to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the outdoors.

Maine Coon Health Issues

When purchasing a Maine Coon it is important to be aware of the main health issues that can affect the breed. As a responsible Maine Coon breeder we test for the genetic diseases: HCM, SMA and PKdef (these are not present in our lines). However not all forms of HCM can be genetically tested for and heart health can only be checked yearly by an echocardiagraph, after reaching 18 months of age. We intend to check all of our cats yearly when they are old enough. So while we try to reduce the chances of HCM it is not a 100% guarantee that your kitten will not develop it in the future.

Our Maine Coons are well socialised and live with our family and a wide range of animals (including dogs). Our Main Coons are particularly fond of our dogs and like to cuddle up to them when they can. When your kitten goes home to you it will have already experienced car travel, being outdoors and indoors (and all the noises that involves) and will of course be fully litter trained. Our Maine Coon kittens go through a detailed socialisation program up until they are 12 weeks old and advice will be given on how to extend this within his/her new home. Please be aware Maine Coons are very social animals (moreso than other breeds of cats) and it would be great if they had a friend to play with when they get to their new home.   black maine coon kitten available As a large breed cat, Maine Coons are also susceptible to hip dysplasia, the bigger they grow the more susceptible they become. At Mighty Kitty's we have chosen Maine Coon studs that are an impressive size - but not too large, in the hopes that the risks of hip dysplasia can be lessened for them in older age. Cats that are not affected by hereditary dysplasia can develop it due to size and/ or being overweight so it is important to keep an eye on your Maine Coon's weight.
As well as HCM, SMA and PKDef, Maine Coons can be affected by Gingivitis and also Stomatitis (painful ulcers and inflammation in the cat's mouth). It is important that you train your kitten so that it is used to its mouth being touched/opened at an early age as you will need to do regular mouth checks (it is also useful to get them used to having their paws handled for clipping and having their ears checked.) It is also important to check and clean the teeth/ mouth for Peridontal Disease and Gingivitis. We provide detailed advice on Maine Coon grooming procedures in our owners manual.   Blue smoke with white male Maine Coon At Mighty Kitty we do what we can to avoid health problems in our Maine Coon kittens and provide you with a comprehensive manual to help advise you on Maine Coon care. We do advise though that you carry on with the health insurance policy that is started when you purchase a kitten from us (or purchase another policy) as cats can be expensive to treat. Whichever policy you choose, be careful to read your policy documents and check for exclusions, especially on cover for their teeth.
